A question I actually get asked quite often is “why are iphones so much cheaper than other phones?” I’m sure you may have noticed when you go in to get an upgrade that the price of some phones even those with a fraction of the capability are significantly more in cost than the iphone. Not only would I like to take quick second to answer this question but to also enlighten some people on how an “upgrade” and phone pricing in general works.

Phone pricing at wireless carriers tends to baffle and even frustrate some people that are likely in an already frustrating situation. Typically we are used to paying the upgrade or new activation prices on cell phones. This involves the signing of a two year contract to agree to stay with that particular carrier or pay an early termination fee of around $150 dollars(more or less). However when the time comes that we maybe need another phone sooner than expected top reasons being dropped in a toliet, lost, stolen, dropped and broken, or ran over by cars. (yes ran over by a car really is a top 5 reason that even surprised me). When we find out that we are not “eligible” for an upgrade we then get the sticker shock of having to pay a price typically in the $200-$700 dollar range to replace out phone. This is likely far less than what we originally paid. So are cell phone companies trying to scam us into paying more? The answer is absolutely not, and many people do not grasp this concept.

When you get an “upgrade” you are signing a two year contract and when that happens your phone is often “subsidized” in cost by the wireless carrier or retailer. Phones are made by manufacturers such as Motorola,Apple,HTC, etc. They sell phones to retail stores which in turn sell them for LESS than what they paid. How can they do this? When you sign that contract the service provider is willing to take a hit on the phone, because they know they will eventually usually several months down the road turn a profit. Getting a new device is often the most important part of the wireless experience to the average consumer so wireless carriers are willing to do what it takes to help you get a new phone and of course use that device to take advantage of new services, features, and subscriptions. Most people would not be able to afford a smart phone if this wasn’t the case.

The reason you have to wait for eligibility to upgrade is, because that carrier has already taken a hit on your first phone purchase and needs to be able to recoup their costs first, and of course profit. This is after all a billion dollar business with extremely high overhead costs. I could go in to a lot more detail, but that is the basic gist of things as far as pricing goes. Not a lot of other service providers do this in other industries, an example being if your cable company sold HD TV’s at a super low cost with activation of service or maybe premium channels.

So why is the iphone upgrade price so much less? Simply put the average cell phone is subsidized about $150 dollars off retail costs (manufacturer price). However AT&T subsidizes the iphone by $400 dollars. How come? The iphone is a top seller and iphone users take advantage of far more features, accessories, and tend to keep these services longer than other phone users affording AT&T to offer an amazingly low price for such a device. So take advantage of the deal and pick one up!

The next time something happens to your cell phone be prepared with this knowledge in mind when looking at the costs of a new phone.

Thats right quick announcement that MMS messaging is finally going to be available for the iPhone. Previously the iPhone could only send pictures via email attachments but now users will be able to do so with MMS messaging to a phone number like other phones.

MMS was supposed to be a feature of the 3.0 software release but unfortuneatly due to the already high data usage of iPhones on AT&T’s network the feature was not able to be used. This will change and be active on sept. 25 2009.

Apple has also made recent announcements such as the iPod touch is now available for $199. The iPod nano now takes video and there is a new version of the ipod shuffle available. I think its going to be a trend of apple taking new tech from its mobile phones and transferring that to the MP3 lines.

I get asked quite frequently what is a good case for the iphone or more importantly what case will best “protect” my iphone in the event of a drop, spill, crash, fire, and what ever other crazy crap people do to their phones.

After trying out tons of different ones and seeing thousands of people and their reviews in person, I would have to say if you are looking for protection the Otter Box is the way to go. Granted this may not be the most stylish case around and although it appears to be bulky its actually on millimeters thicker than most hard shell cases that only cover the back of the phone and offer no screen protection.

These cases really are about as tough as they claim to be, you can drop your phone and toss it across the room and 99% of the time it will be just fine. This is in part to the 3 piece construction and the tabs around the shell which absorb a lot of the impacts your phone takes when it hits the ground. The sealed nature and screen protector also make it very dust and water resistant. (Notice I did NOT say water proof!) Do not submerge this case in liquid like any other situation involving a wet phone it will not end well.

On another note this seems to be one of the best overall cases if your looking for something that you can clip on your belt. I personally don’t rock the belt clips but if that’s your thing or if its needed for work situations then this case is also the best choice, simply due to the fact its designed with the clip in mind. Most other cases with a clip require that the iphone be removed and other wise unprotected and the chances of you dropping it while trying to take it out of a clip are pretty good to say the least.

So if you are one of those people whining about how you think you can’t get an iPhone, because you might break it then fork over a few bucks and get the Otter Box.

Here is a quick review of two of the most popular twitter apps available at the App store and best of all they are both FREE!

Tweet Deck: I was a big fan of the desktop application to begin with giving this one a huge advantage. In fact I was already using it on my Macbook well before I even downloaded it on my phone. As far as desktop apps for twitter go I think it really is one of the best around. Its easy to read and very customizable, and you can very easily operate multiple accounts with the application.

For the iPhone Tweet Deck mimics the layout and functions of the desktop app allowing multiple columns for what is most important to you such as @replies, DM’s etc. My personal favorite is the ability to easily create columns for specific groups of people, this allows me to see all the updates I want to see even while following a large number of people. I can also easily separate my tweets I want to read for business and ones from personal friends in to different columns.

TwitterFon: Just recently decided to break away from Tweet Deck on my phone to try this one out and I must say I’m quite pleased with it so far. The lay out is very easy to read and operate a huge plus for any app that you like to use frequently. While the customization of the app may not be nearly as in depth as something like Tweet Deck it really is very easy to use and just overall a nice app for the constant tweeter (or twitterer what ever you want to call it)

So which one is better? In my opinion why not just get them both? I like the customization of Tweet Deck yet the simplicity and nice lay out of TwitterFon is appealing as well. Choosing just one could probably come down to a matter of personal preference and depend on what type of tweeting you do but more the average user I would say TwitterFon is the easier choice to get started with.

At this point in time Apple is still the most powerful player in the smartphone market and other manufactures are still trying to come up with the next big phone that will be an “iphone killer”.

HTC is about to launch it’s “Hero” in late 2009 in the US with the sprint network. We have yet to get our hands on one to test it out for ourselves but with the info available we can draw a few conclusions.

First and foremost the fact that this HTC is an android phone makes a big difference right away. I have owned some nice HTC devices all of which being windows based and although I was usually impressed with certain features I found them to be sluggish and buggy. The new HTC Hero however seems promising and a few details about how its interface works have already been revealed.

Much like other competitors such as the Palm Pre, HTC is going after the iphone in a similar manner and that means having an interface that allows multiple apps to continually run in the background and open. The new HTC Hero allows for up to seven home pages that can have different “widgets” running at the same time. This for some can be an advantage over the iphone and seems to be a trend among those looking to steal some market share from apple.

As far as the operation goes the phone uses a touch screen and a track ball in a very nice but somewhat awkward looking package. When we can get our hands on one we will be able to discuss further about the quality of the touch screen and other capabilities.

The Camera will be a 5.0 mega-pixel with video capabilities but a some what disappointing 512mb internal memory, however it is expandable with an SD card. The Hero looks to have a very slick OS but is definitely not geared towards the music or media user.

So will this phone cause people to run out and ditch their iphones for a Hero? Probably not, although the phone has some nice qualities I feel its going to be a Palm Pre sequel with a few people anxious to try it, but I doubt its going to get iphone users to convert in masses. If any phone is going to do this they really need to step their app store up and nail the interface for both newb and tech savy users alike. I’m keeping my iphone thats for sure..
